(2) The Influence of Faction Flashcards
Break=Temporary
Many (including Pope) believed these acts were just applying pressure to get annulment and they’d soon be reversed
Appeal restraint meant no resolution and Bishops now under only King appointment so couldn’t oppose as they’d loose job or get praemunire charge
Cromwell and Parliament
He manipulated anti-clericalism to gain Rome break support
He moved away from pressuring Pope and focused on establishing independence - more power Parliament had meant he had more influence
He was made Vice-gerent of Spirituals in 1534 (he ran church admin)
Cranmer on divorce and Supremacy
Cranmer wrote a book compiling arguments for Kings Supremacy
It said English Bishops had the right to decide validity of marriage without Rome
Aragonese Supporters
Chapuys kept C in loop of court politics
More and Fisher loosely supported her
Carew and Guilford (court gentlemen) also supported
Lord Darcy and Hussey as well
Elizabeth Barton (regarded as a saint) was hung in 1534 after her enemies successfully ruined her reputation
More and the divorce
When he was appointed Chancellor (1529) H promised he wouldn’t involve him in the negotiations
After submission of the Clergy More resigned (1532), he hoped to go quietly and silently continue support for Catholic Church
1533 H invited More to Anne marriage but he declined
More was called to take oath but was imprisoned as he refused - he argued by not taking it but also not speaking against it he had not broken the law but 1535 he was executed for treason (Fisher executed same year same reason)
Monks opposition
Franciscan and Carthusian monks were against the divorce wholeheartedly
5 Carthusian monks were terribly tortured and still wouldn’t take oath - they were duly executed
