2 Flashcards
What are sensory neurons?
Nerve cells involved in communicating tactile, auditory or visual information
What are motor neurons?
Nerve cells that initiate muscle contraction or activate glands
What is the central nervous system responsible for?
Receives sensory input and functions to organize, analyze and process information
What is the peripheral nervous system responsible for?
Conveying motor commands, carrying sensory information to the CNS and regulating involuntary functions
Which classification of neurons communicates tactile, auditory and visual information?
Sensory neurons
Which classifications of neurons sends signals away from the CNS?
Efferent neurons (e = exit, a=arrive)
Which branch of the PNS controls voluntary movement?
Somatic nervous system
Which branch of the PNS controls involuntary functions and movement?
Autonomic nervous system
What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?
Sympathetic - responsible for flight or fight, para - responsible for rest and digest
Which motor neuron that originates from the brain stem and spinal cords initiate muscle contractions?
alpha motor neurons
What muscle fibre arrangement is the soleus muscle?
bipennate
Which muscle fibre arrangement is triangular in appearance and spread over a large area?
Convergent
Which skeleton is the shoulder and pelvic girdle a part of?
Appendicular skeleton
What type of bone is the calcaneous?
Irregular bone
Which type of bone protects internal organs and provides a large surface area for muscles to attach?
flat bone
