explain motives behind religious reform?
A
- wanted to reinstate traditional catholic doctrines in the church
- her mother was also a strict catholic
- Mary saw the break with rome as a sinful act and was determined to correct it
- at first her reform to catholicism was popular, but when it became oppressive = heretic= she lost support

explain changes in legislation?
A
-Parliament met October 1553=
1. first act of repeal: swept away all religious legislation approved during Ed’s reign
-parliament 1555=
2. second act of repeal: one Mary’s marriage had been settled in 54 she felt comfortable to implement this= effectively making the country catholic again, with the pope as the head of the church
government policy was now divided into 2 strands, education and persecution

explain the policy of persecution?
A
- giving her the title of ‘bloody Mary’
- leading protestant churchmen eg. Archbishop Cranmer were arrested and replaced with catholics
- w/in a year senior clergy had been purged of protestantism
- once Heresy laws had been revived since VIII, Protestants who would not renounce their faith were burned at the stake in their communities 1st=John Rogers (300)= asserting royal authority
