  • cromwell attempted to reform the country government by attacking people that stopped the full operation of royal justice

explain work with the vagabonds?

A

-cromwell created the first ‘tudor poor law’ = vagabonds act 1531= distributed food to the local poor (200+ came everyday)
-made a distinction between those unable to work, and the unwilling (punished)
-Jp’s took the role to administer this system, and carried out alms collections for the poor
=sought to minimise the effect of social disruption caused by external factors out of their control eg. increasing population

explain policy in Wales?

A
  • act of union 1536, wales became incorporated into the english legal and admin system
  • right after the pilmgrimage of grace
  • 1536: franchise act, brought the administration of welsh in line with England
  • can be viewed as cromwell attempting to merge wales into England
  • making England more centralised and Wales more dependent on the monarchy
  • 29 seats added to the council were predominantly from wales

explain policy in Ireland?

A

-Earl of Kildare felt english interference and Thomas Boleyn was rising to power due to H’s interest in his daughters, he was replaced by Thomas Howard, breaking the power from the Kildares
-1534 earl of kildare killed by henry as he wouldn’t allow reforms to the church =rebellion hard to suppress, as attempt to bring irish government under English control failed = expensive to the crown
-1539= Henry dissolved monasteries= reforms successful
1.establishing it as a separate kingdom under english law
2. Gaelic leaders took english titles
HOWEVER… lacked resources to do this, and there was no Irish loyalty to the English crown
