1.7 Ventral Forearm Flashcards
superficial forearm muscles all attach to what through a common flexor tendon? all cross what joint?
medial epicondyle, elbow joint
- forms medial boundary of cubital fossa
- innervated by median nerve
- origin: humeral and ulnar head
- inserts: lateral surface of radius
pronator teres
- origin: medial epicondyle
- insertion: 2nd metacarpal
- innervated by median nerve
flexor carpi radialis
- tendon attaches to palmar aponeurosis
- test by opposing thumb and pinky
- absent in 16% of caucasians
- function: retract claws/nails
palmaris longus
- origin: medial epicondyle
- inserts onto pisiform, hook of hamate, base of 5th metacarpal bone
- innervated by ulnar nerve
flexor carpi ulnaris
- origin: humeral, ulnar, and radial head
- inserts: body of mid phalanges
- flexes the proximal interphalangeal joint
- innervated by median nerve
flexor digitorum superficialis
- origin: ulna and interosseus membrane
- tendons deep to FDS, insert onto base of distal phalanges
- flex distal interphalangeal joint
- median nerve serves 2 and 3 digits, ulnar nerve serves 4 and 5 digits
flexor digitorum profundus
origin: anterior radius, interosseus membrane
insertion: base of distal phalanx
- innervated by median nerve
- flexes the thumb
flexor pollicis longus
- deepest muscle in anterior forearm, covers distal 1/4th of radius and ulna
- pronates the forearm
pronator quadratus
-travels with brachial artery to enter forearm, go on in middle forearm in between FDS and FDP
median nerve
-branch of median nerve, branches out distal cubital fossa
anterior interosseus nerve
arises proximal to flexor retinaculum, supplies skin of lateral palm
palmar cutaneous branch of median nerve
branches distal to flexor retinaculum, supplies 3 thenar muscles
recurrent branch of median nerve in forearm and hand
median nerve injury, compressed between two heads of pronator teres muscle, pope’s hand when forming fist
pronator syndrome
passes posterior to medial epicondyle of humerus, in between epicondyle and olecranon, enters hand through canal of Guyon
ulnar nerve
supplies flexor carpi ulnaris and medial half (digit 4 and 5) of FDP
ulnar nerve
- numb and tingling of medial part of palm and digits 4 and 5
- reduced adduction of fingers
- clawhand
- caused by direct hit of funny bone or bicyclers who hold handle bar too tight
ulnar nerve injury
ulnar nerve compressed by flexor carpi ulnaris
cubital tunnel syndrome
continuation of ulnar artery, anastamoses with radial artery
superficial palmar arch
passes deeply, anastamoses with radial artery
deep palmar arch
demarcates flexors and extensors of the forearm, runs across anatomical snuffbox into hand, forms arterial palmar arches
radial artery
supplies brachioradialis and brachialis,
radial recurrent artery
medial epicondylitis
golfer elbow
