Describe the key features of the Gunpowder Plot…
This was a plot with 12 Catholic plotters to blow up the Houses of Parliament while it was in session, killing James and Henry, with Elizabeth consequently made the heir.
The plot was discovered when Sir Francis Tresham wrote a letter to his brother in law, urging him not to attend parliament. This was found by Robert Cecil, the Earl of Salisbury, it is thought he discovered the plot in April 1604 and wanted to discover more plotters through the two searches of the cellar.
On 4 November, 1605, the gunpowder was discovered in the cellar.
What were consequences of the Gunpowder Plot?
Guy Fawkes was tortured and killed. His statement absolving Jesuits of guilt was conveniently lost.
Sir Francis Tresham fell ill in the tower. It is believed he could have poisoned himself so his children may inherit his property.
Catholics, including Jesuits such as Father Henry Garnet, were hung, drawn, and quartered.
The Jesuit order and the Pope condemned the plot.
The Catholics were punished with : restricted travel; being forbidden to be doctors or lawyers; having homes searched; having 2/3s of property confiscated for recusants; being fined for not attending Puritan communion three times a year.
