(16) Clotting Cascade (Staudinger) Flashcards
D. Time required for full expression of the Factor II, VII, IX and X genes
What are the Vitamin K dependent factors?
Factor X (LONG HALF LIFE 40-60 h)
Factor IX
Factor II (LONG HALF LIFE 60 h)
Factor VII
Protein C
Protein S
What is the extrinisc pathway activated by?
External trauma
(blood to escape from the vascular system)
What is the intrinsic pathway activated by?
Trauma inside the vascular system
(* activated by platelets, exposed endothelium, chemicals, or collagen)
What factors does the common pathway include?
I
II
V
X
What is primary hemostasis?
Platelets in the blood aggregate at the injury site and form a platelet plug to block the hole
What is secondary hemostasis?
Platelet plug is further reinforced by a fibrin mesh produced through proteolytic coagulation cascase
What is the key difference b/w primary and secondary hemostasis?
Primary hemostasis makes a weak platelet plug at the injury site,
While secondary hemostasis makes it strong by generating a fibrin mesh on it
Vitamin K is a cofactor in synthesizing factors…
II
VII
IX
X
Protein s
Protein c
Warfarin (coumadin) works by…
Decreasing the activity of vitamin k-dependent epoxide reductase;
lengthening the time it takes for a clot to form
Which form of warfarin is more active?
S-warfarin or R-warfarin?
S-warfarin!!!
“So Strong”
What do protein c and protein s do?
Maintains the permeability of blood vessles
*Proteolytically inactivate Factor 5a and Factor 8a
Hemophilia A, aka?
Factor VIII deficiency
or
Classic Hemophilia A
*unable to activate factor X
B. Facilitation of the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin
C. VII
PT is typically 12-13 seconds
PTT is typically 30-50 seconds
