15.1.5 - Square planar complexes Flashcards
What is a common example of a square planar complex?
cis-platin
Describe the structure of cis-platin.
central platinum ion.
2 chloride ligands
2 ammonia ligands.
Same molecules are on the same side.
What is the isomer of cis-platin and how do their structures differ?
Trans-platin
Trans platin has the same ligands on opposite sides of the molecule.
How does cis-platin work in cancer treatment?
Cancer cells contain DNA.
During cell division, the two strands of DNA must separate from each other to form more DNA.
Cis-platin forms a bond between the two strands of DNA, which prevents them from separating and therefore cancer cells cannot divide.
Does trans-platin also work in cancer treatment?
NO
What are some side effects of cis-platin?
Kidney damage
Hair loss
