Recovery
- Process of change where individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, strive to reach their full potential.
- Built on evidence based clinical treatment and support services
- Process of moving forward towards improvement of health and quality of life
Dimensions of Recovery
Health - Overcoming/managing disease and living healthy both physically and emotionally
Home - Stable/Safe place to live
Purpose - Meaningful daily activity (job/school, family caretaking, independence)
Community - Relationship and social network of support, friendship, love and hope
Tidal Model
- Person-centered approach to help people deal with problems of living
- Focused on individuals personal story
- Value of Voice (encouraged to tell their story and provider should listen)
- Respect the language (encouraged to speak their own words)
- Develop genuine curiosity (have interest and ask questions/clarification in their story)
- Become the apprentice (individuals should lead in their decisions of what needs to be done. Plan of care should be made based on expressed needs)
- Use of available toolkit (Identify individuals strengths and use these as tools for recovery)
- Craft the step beyond (Together, practitioner and person need to decide what needs to be done immediately to take the first step towards their goal)
- Give the Gift of Time (Acknowledging the importance of time given to a patient)
- Reveal Personal Wisdom (Helping individuals identify personal strengths and weaknesses and to develop self confidence)
- Know that change is constant (Change is constant and decisions must be made along the path of recovery in order for growth to occur. Professionals should help influence these changes)
- Be Transparent (Important in team-building process)
Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)
- Process where patients can monitor and manage stress of every day life.
- Others can help but individual empowerment comes from self-administration of the plan.
WRAP
Step 1 - Develop a wellness toolbox (develop strategies they have used or heard of in the past to try and relieve disturbing symptoms)
Step 2 - Daily Maintenance List
- Part 1 - Write how they feel when feeling well
- Part 2 - Make a list of what they need to do to maintain wellness
- Part 3 - Individual keeps lists of things that need to be done
Step 3 - Triggers
- Part 1 - Lists things that causes distress
- Part 2 - Develop plans for when these triggers occur
Step 4 - Early Warning Signs
- Part 1 - Identify subtle signs that indicate worsening of a situation
- Part 2 - Develops plan to respond to early signs to prevent it from worsening
Step 5 - Things are breaking down or getting worse
- Part 1 - List symptoms of worsening condition
- Part 2 - Make a plan that can help when symptoms are at this degree
Step 6 - Crisis Planning
- Identify symptoms where individual can no longer care for themselves or make independent decisions. Is meant for use of the caregiver on behalf of individual who developed the plan.
Psychological Recovery
- Establishment of fulfilling, meaningful and positive sense of identity based on hopefulness and self-determination.
- Does not focus on absence of symptoms but on persons self-determination during the course of recovery.
Components of Recovery Process
Hope - Finding and maintaining hope for recovery
Responsibility - Taking responsibility for one’s own well-being
Self and Identity - Renewing sense of self and building positive identity
Meaning and Purpose - Finding meaning and purpose to life
5 Stages of Recovery
- Moratorium - Dark despair and confusion
- Awareness - Realization that recovery is possible
- Preparation - Individual resolve to begin work of recovery
- Rebuilding - Most of the hard work is in rebuilding
- Growth - Outcome of recovery is growth. Although this is a stage, growth continues life long.
