- Appetite regulation center
- Hypothalamic dysfunctions could be a main cause of anorexia nervosa
Bulimia
- Associated with serotonin and Norepinephrine and high levels of endogenous opioids.

Anorexia Nervosa
A
- Morbid fear of obesity
- Extreme weight loss by reduction of food intake and extensive exercise.
- Self-induced vomiting and abuse of laxatives/diuretics also may occur
Symptoms
- Refusal to eat
- Obsession with food (may hoard or conceal food, talk about food recipes a lot, prepare elaborate meals for others)
- Hypothermia, bradycardia, hypotension, lanugo, amenorrhea, anxiety, depression, gross distortion of body image.

Bulimia Nervosa
A
- Excessive insatiable appetite
- Uncontrollable, compulsive rapid ingestion of large quantities of food over a short period of time (binging) followed by ridding body of excess calories (vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, enemas)
Characteristics
- Fasting or excessive exercise
- Persistent concern with personal appearance and how others perceive them
- USUALLY NORMAL WEIGHT
- Excessive vomiting, laxative and diuretic use which can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances

Binge Eating Disorder
A
- Binge eating similar to bulimia without the purging
- Client usually is at high risk of weight gain.

- Normal (18.5-24.9)
- Obese (30+)
