Personality
- The totality of emotional and behavioral characteristics that are particular to a specific person and that remains somewhat stable and predictable over time.
Personality Traits
- Characteristics in which an individual is born with or develops early in life. Influences the way a person perceives or relates to the environment
Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal
- Suspicious, Odd, Eccentric
Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Naraccist
- Emotional and Impulsive
- Dramatic and Erratic
Avoidant, Dependent, Obessive-Compulsive
- Anxious and fearful
Paranoid Personality Disorder
- Pervasive mistrust and suspiciousness of others.
- Misinterprets other peoples motives as malevolent
S/S
- Constantly on guard, hypervigilant, and ready for any imagined threat
- Tense and irritable
- Hard exterior and insensitive to feelings of others.
- Believe others are there to take advantage of them.
- Extremely over sensitive
- Trust no one and constantly tests honesty of others
- DO NOT ACCEPT RESONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN BEHAVIORS
Predisposition Factors
- Childhood trauma or neglect
- They learned to perceive the world as harsh and unkind.
Schizoid Personality Disorder
- Profound defect in the ability to form personal relationships
- Often seen as eccentric, isolated and lonely.
- Lifelong social withdrawal and discomfort with human interaction.
S/S
- Often invest in intellectual pursuits
- No friends, prefers to be alone
- Shy, anxious, uneasy in the presence of others
- Inappropriately serious about everything
Risk Factors
- Cold, bleak, unempathetic childhood
Schizotypal Disorder
- Symptoms look more like schizophrenia than schizoid personality.
- Behave in a bland and apathetic matter.
- Seems like they are living in their own world and under stress may demonstrate psychotic symptoms
Symptoms
- Magical thinking
- Illusions
- Depersonalization
- Superstitiousness
- Speech sometimes vague and digress from topic at hand.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
- Socially irresponsible, exploitative, guiltless behavior and disregard for the right of others.
- Exploits and manipulates others for personal gain
- Does not obey the law
S/S
- Cannot keep a job
- Fails to follow the law
- Exploits others for personal gain
- Fails to develop stable relationships
Borderline Personality Disorder
- Intense and chaotic relationships, affective instability and fluctuating attitudes towards others.
- Impulsive and self destructive.
- Lacks clear sense of identity
Histrionic Personality Disorder
- Self dramatizing
- Attention seeking
- Seductive
- Manipulative
- Strongly dependent
Narcissist Personality Disorder
- Lacks empathy and characterized by an over inflated sense of worth.
- Believes they deserve special attention
- Criticism from others can cause them to respond with rage, shame, humiliation
- Exploits others for their own desire
Avoidant Personality Disorder
- Extremely sensitive to rejection which can lead to a socially withdrawn life
- They can have a strong desire for companionship but shyness and fear of rejection can stop this.
S/S
- Awkward and uncomfortable in social situations.
- Desire for close relationships but avoids them due to fear of being rejected
- Timid, cold, strange
- Often lonely and feels unwanted
Dependent Personality Disorder
- Lack of self-confidence and extreme reliance on others to take responsibility for them. They may feel helpless when alone and be submissive.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder
- Overly disciplined, perfectionist, pre-occupied with rules. Inflexible in the way they want things done.
- Intense fear of making mistakes which leads to difficult decision making.
- THEY DO NOT HAVE REPEATED OBESSIONS AND COMPULSIONS LIKE THEY WOULD IN OCD
