14. Lymphatic System Flashcards
lol
Maintains fluid balance in tissues, absorbs lipids from the small intestine, and defend against pathogens.
Lymphatic System
Consist of lymph, lymphocytes, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, tonsils, the spleen, and the thymus.
Lymphatic System
Are tiny, closed-ended vessels consisting of simple squamous epithelium.
Lymphatic Capillaries
Join to form larger vessels resembling small veins. They have beaded appearance because they have one-way valves that are similar to the valves of veins.
Lymphatic Capillaries
Three factors which cause compression of the lymphatic vessel.
- Contraction of surrounding skeletal muscle during activity.
- Pressure changes in the thorax during breathing.
- Periodic contraction of smooth muscle in the lymphatic vessel wall
Three groups of tonsils
- Paired Palatine Tonsils
- Pharyngeal Tonsils
- Lingual Tonsil
Rounded structures, varying from the size of a small seed to a shelled almond.
Lymph Nodes
Roughly the size of a clenched first located in the left superior corner of the abdominal cavity.
Spleen
A bilobed gland roughly triangular in shape
Thymus
Lymphatic capillaries and vessels remove fluid from tissue and absorb lipids from the small intestine, lymph nodes filter lymph, and the spleen filters blood.
Lymphatic System
The ability to resist damage from pathogens
Immunity
-Called as nonspecific resistance
-body recognizes the pathogens and respond to it but the response is the same when exposed to the same pathogens
Innate Immunity
-called as Specific Immunity
-Body respond to pathogens and the response improves each time the pathogen is encountered.
Adaptive Immunity
Characteristics of Adaptive Immunity
Specificity (an ability to recognize a particular substance)
Memory (ability to remember previous encounters with a particular substances)
Prevent pathogens and chemicals from entering the body.
Physical Barriers (Skin; tears, saliva, and urine.)
