12. Heart Flashcards
deck
Muscular organ essential for life as it pumps the blood
Heart
Functions of the Heart
- Generates bp
- Ensuring one-way blood flow
- Routing blood
- Regulating blood supply
Is approximately the size of a closed first which is shaped like a blunt cone and located in the thoracic cavity
Heart
An artery that carries blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
Pulmonary Trunk
An artery that wherein blood comes from the left ventricle and carries blood to the rest of the body
Aorta
*Receives blood from the veins
*function as reservoirs
*separated internally from each other by the interatrial septum
Right and Left Atria
Three Major Openings of Heart
- Superior and
- Inferior Vena Cava
- Coronary Sinus
Major pumping chambers
Right and Left Ventricles
This ensure one-way blood flow
Heart Valve
Located between each atrium and ventricle
Atrioventricular Valves (AV)
Located between each ventricle and its associated great artery
Semilunar Valves
Separates the right atrium and the right ventricle (Three cups)
Tricuspid Valve
Also called the mitral valve separating left atrium and left ventricle
Bicuspid Valve
Attach the papillary muscles to the free margins of the cusps of the atrioventricular valves
Chordae Tendineae
Cone-shaped, muscular pillars in each ventricle
Papillary Muscles
Located between the right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve
Located between the left ventricle and aorta
Aortic Semilunar Valve
Route of blood flow through the heart
- Right Atrium
- Right Ventricle
- Pulmonary trunk to lungs
- Lungs to pulmonary veins to left atrium
- left atrium to left ventricle
- Left ventricle to aorta and systemic vessels.
Supply blood to the wall of the heart
Coronary Arteries
Three Major Branches of Left Coronary Artery
- Anterior Interventricular Artery
- Circumflex Artery
- Left Marginal Artery
Two Major Branches of Right Coronary Artery
- Posterior Interventricular Artery
- Right Marginal Artery
Drains blood from the cardiac muscle and carry the blood from the wall of the heart back to the right atrium
Cardiac Veins
Three Layers of Tissue
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
Surfaces of the interior wall of the ventricles
Trabeculae Carneae
Elongated, branching cells that contain one or occadionally
Cardiac Muscle
Record electrical events in the heart
Elctrocardiogram
Repetitive pumping process that begins with the onset of cardiac muscle contraction and ends with the beginning of the next contraction
Cardiac Cycle
Contraction and Relaxation of two atria
Atrial Systole
Atrial Diastole
Two main heart sounds
Lubb Dupp
First heart sound which has a lower pitch
Lubb
Second heart sound
Dupp
Heart valve does not close completely
Incompetent Valve
Abnormal heart sounds
Murmurs
