What are the different stages in the development of a team?
What factors can affect each of these stages?
Creation - introductions, role uncertainty, establishing objectives.
Development - clear objectives, trust and support building.
Maintenance - continue to motivate and challenge, minimise conflict.
Leadership - encourage feedback, identify development needs, lead by example.
What does the Belbin model show?
A team development understanding model that outlines the roles that are important for an effective team - some team members will be more comfortable with some roles. Strengths and weaknesses.
What does the Margerison McCann model show?
A team development model that looks at the individual’s preferred role and using that, how they can work well with others in the team.
What does the Myer’s Briggs model show?
A team development model that looks at individiuals’ perceptions, communication preferences and situation reactions.
What does the Hackman model show?
This shows the stages of team development and suggests that there are 5 stages needed for a team to be effective :
- Real team formed
- Direction clear
- Team working structure
-Supportive organisation - Coaching available
What does the Tuckman model show?
- This model shows the stages of team development in the following way :
- Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing
What does the Katzenbach and Smith model show?
This model recognises that more effective teams produce greater performance.
So the leader is focused on developing accountability and skillsets.
What are some characteristics of effective teams?
- Clear roles and responsibilities that are ALIGNED to strengths.
- Open, clear and honest communication leading to greater trust and confidence. This also allows for innovation.
- A common goal and purpose.
What are some benefits of having an effective team?
- Improved motivation through sense of belonging and shared purpose.
- Problem solving and innovation through trust and open communication.
- Increased productivity as team members are allocated according to strengths.
How can leaders deal with virtual teams?
- Enable trust by holding regular team meetings and allowing everyone to contribute.
- Formal and informal meetings.
- Online collaborative workspaces like Teams.
- Overcome cultural differences by encouraging correct behaviours.
- Clear messaging and listening.
- Open communication by agreeing norms of communication.
- acknowledge time zone differences and be adaptable.
