12 Leadership Flashcards
What is the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs model?
This is one way a leader can boost team performance - by understanding what need on the pyramid a team member needs fulfilled to be happy towards self - actualisation.
What is Herzberg’s two factor model?
This is when a leader understands that there are hygiene factors that must be fulfilled (e.g. salary, working conditions, benefits etc) before using motivators to then motivate employees to be more productive (meaning, recognition, career development, culture etc).
What is McGregor’s X and Y Model?
This is understanding that there are two types of people - X and Y.
X - doesnt want to work, unmotivated, there just to work and earn money. They may be motivated by financial incentives (anything for themselves) or by directive leadership style.
Y - self motivated, innovative, enjoys work and what they do. Motivated by responsibility, creativity and self -fulfilment.
What are the three different leadership styles that exist and when are each of them appropriate?
Autocratic : Leader with full authority.
This is appropriate when objectives are in danger of not being met, when issues become critical or where team members are lacking motivation.
Democratic/ Participative : This is when leaders involve team members in their decision - making process.
Appropriate when there is time to focus on team building and when collaboration is valued. Decision making will be passed on to competent team members.
Laissez-faire/Delegative : Employees are empowered to make their own decisions. Appropriate when team is already established and working well and has the required knowledge to work independently.
