13. Brain Mind Behaviour Flashcards
What is cognition?
subserved distributed (sub-symbolic) processes that are embedded in the brain and are constrained by brain connectivity and neural function
What is dualism?
the philosophy of mind that regards the mind as a nonphysical substance. It divides everything there is in the world into two distinct categories
what are the two categories in dualism?
mental and physical
what is the difficulty with dualism?
failure to account adequately for the casual interaction of the mental and the physical. It is not evident how the nonphysical mind could give rise to any physical effects without violating the laws of conservation of mass, energy and mementum
what is the radical behaviourism?
the philosophy of mind that denies the existence of the mind and mental states, properties, processes and operations.
what does the radical behaviourist believe?
behaviour does not have mental causes. He considers the behaviour of an organism to be its responses to stimuli.
what is the role of psychology in radical behaviourism?
catalogue the relations between stimuli and responses
what is the central state identity theory?
the philosophy of mind that equates mental events, states and processes with neural physiological events. property of being in the given mental state is identical with the property of being in a given neurophysiological state.
what are the levels of analysis?
- computation theory
- representation and algorithm
- hardware implementation
what is involved in morphological?
function (wing powered flight), mechanisms (flight mechanisms and aerodynamics), structure (bones and muscles)
what is involves in pshychological?
computation (choosing an appropriate tool), representation and algorithm (inputs information processing) implementation (neural structures and pathways)
