1.2.8 Protein synthesis Flashcards
1
Q
Where does transcription take place?
A
It takes place in the nucleus
2
Q
Describe the process of transcription
A
- DNA double helix unwinds and H bonds break
- The template strand is used in the production of mRNA
- mRNA is built from free RNA nucleotides
- The order of DNA exactly determines the order of RNA bases
3
Q
What is the template strand called?
A
The antisense strand
4
Q
How does the mRNA produced in transcription get to the ribosomes for translation?
A
The mRNA leaves through nuclear pores, and enters the cytoplasm, where the ribosomse are
5
Q
Describe the process of translation
A
- The ribosomes cover the mRNA at the initiation end
- A tRNA molecule carrying an amino acid has anticodons which bind to the mRNA
- As the tRNA goes across the mRNA, the amino acids form a polypeptide chain
