1.1.11 Cholesterol Flashcards
What does cholesterol combine with to make it soluble in water?
Combines with proteins to form lipoproteins
How is LDL made?
The triglycerides from unsaturated fats combine with cholesterol and protein
How does LDL cause high cholesterol levels?
It binds to receptor sites on cell membranes before being taken up. Excess LDL in the diet overloads the receptor sites, causing high cholesterol levels
Where may the high amount cholesterol be deposited?
The cholesterol may be deposited in the artery walls, forming an atheroma
What is the difference between LDL and HDL?
There is a higher percentage of protein in HDL. It is also made from saturated fats rather than unsaturated
Why is HDL known as the good cholesterol?
HDL transport cholesterol from the body to the liver to be broken down. This lowers blood cholesterol levels.
