1.2.12 Genes Flashcards
What two alleles does the CF gene appear in?
- Normal (F)
- Mutated (f)
What is the phenotype of someone with the genotype of FF?
Normal
What is the genotype if someone has the phenotype of having CF?
ff
What is the phenotype of someone with the genotype of Ff?
Carries of CF
What is a genotype?
Genotype - made up of alleles a person has
What is a phenotype?
Phenotype - the characteristics a person has, caused by the genotype
What can be used to show the expected genotype of offspring?
The expected genotypes can be shown using a punnett square
What is affected is someone has thalassaemia?
This gene makes haemoglobin. If someone has the genetic disease, they will either not make haemoglobin, or they will make non-functioning haemoglobin.
What happens to someone if they are hetrozygous for thalassaemia?
They will have some protection from malaria. This is called ‘hetrozygous advantage’.
What will happen to someone if they are homozygous for achondroplasia?
They will die
What will happen to someone who is hetrozygous for achondroplasia?
They will have restricted growth, especially in the limbs
Define locus
The positioning of a gene
Define allele
A variation of a gene
