1.1.2 Types of circulatory system Flashcards
What happens in an open circulatory system?
In an open circulatory system blood is pumped into cavities by the heart so it can diffuse into surrounding cells and organs. When the heart relaxes, the blood is drawn back from the cavities back to the heart through small openings.
What does blood travel through in a closed circulatory system?
Blood is enclosed in tubes
Why is a closed circulatory system more efficient than an open one?
The closed tubes create higher blood pressure, meaning the animal is more efficient at delivering substances
What does the blood travel through to get from the heart to cells?
the blood leaves the heart under high pressure and flows along arteries and then along arterioles and then capillaries
What does blood travel through to get from the cells to the heart?
Through the capillaries to the venules, to the veins, to the heart
What ensures that blood flows in one direction?
Valves ensure blood flows in one direction
In what animal can a single circulatory system be found?
Single circulatory systems can be found in fish
Describe the process of the circulatory system of a fish
The heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the gills, gas exchange takes place, taking in water and getting rid of carbon dioxide. Blood then flows around the rest of the body before returning to the heart.
Which ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs?
The right ventricle
Which ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body?
The left ventricle
Why is the double circulatory system more efficient that a single one?
The heart gives the blood an extra boost which reduces the time taken for the blood to circulate once
