1.1.10 Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids that we eat?
Lipids that we eat are triglycerides
What are triglycerides made up of?
Three fatty acids and a glycerol molecule
What are triglycerides help together by?
Ester bonds
What reaction joins together a triglyceride?
A condensation reaction, removing H2O
What type of C-C bond does a saturated fat contain?
Only single C-C bonds
What is the structure of a saturated fat?
Long and straight
Why are saturated fats solid at room temperature?
The chains can pack together due to their long and straight structure
What type of C-C bond do unsaturated fats contain?
They contain a double C=C bond
What is the difference between a monounsaturated fat and a polyunsaturated fat?
Monounsaturated contain 1 C=C bond, polyunsaturated contain 2
Why are unsaturated fats not solid at room temperature?
The double bonds cause kinks to occur, meaning the structures cannon be packed closely together
What is an example of an unsaturated fat?
Olive oil
