1.1.12 Drug treatments Flashcards
What are ACE inhibitors?
Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitors. They are effective antihypertensive drugs.
What do ACE inhibitors do?
They reduce the synthesis of angiotensin II, the hormone that causes vasoconstriction
What are the side effects of ACE inhibitors?
- Dry cough
- Dizziness due to rapid lowering bp
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Reduced kidney function
What are Calcium Channel Blockers? and what do they do?
They are antihypertensive drugs that block calcium channels in the muscle lining of the arteries. The calcium is needed for contraction
What are the side effects of Calcium Channel Blockers?
- Dizziness
- Swollen ankles
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Flushing red in the face
- Constipation
How do diuretics decrease bp?
They increase the volume of urine produced by kidneys. This leads to a decrease in blood plasma volume, leading to lower bp
What are the side effects of using diuretics?
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Muscle cramps
What do platelet inhibitory drugs and anticoagulents do?
They reduce the chance of blood clotting
What does asprin do?
It reduced the stickiness of platelets and therefore the chance of a clot
What may be a chance of when using asprin?
There is a chance of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract
What is an alternative to people who are allergic to asprin?
Clopidogrel are an alternative
What type of drug is warfarin?
Anticoagulent
What does warfarin affect?
Affects the synthesis of clotting factors
What is the main type of cholesterol-lowering drug?
Statins
How do statins work?
They work by inhibiting an enzyme involved in the production of LDL
