What was the Mamluk Sultanate?
A kingdom established in Egypt (1250-1517) by Mamluks, former slaves to Arabs that thrived with cotton and and sugar trade until Europe developed new sea routes for trade.
Who were the Seljuk Turks?
Central Asian Muslims who began conquering parts of the Middle East in the 11th Century. They called their leader a “sultan”.
What was the Abassid Caliphate?
An Islamic kingdom led by Arabs and Persians.
Who was Muhammad?
The prophet of Islam and author of the Quaran.
Who were the Crusaders?
Christians who travelled to the Middle East to fight against Muslims for control of what they thought of as the “Holy Lands”.
Who were the Sufis?
Muslims who practiced mysticism. They emphasized introspection to access fundamental truths over extensive scriptural study.
Baghdad
A city and thriving center of trade located in modern Iraq. Controlled by the Abassid Empire, it lost a lot of its traditional plcae as the center of trade as trade routes moved north. As it lost trade, it lost population and wealth and fell into decline.
Who was Nasir al-Din al Tusi?
A celebrated Islamic scholar who contibuted to learning in astronomy, mathmatics and many other areas.
Who was ‘A’ishah al-Ba’uniyyah
A female sufi poet and mystic.
What was the House of Wisdom?
A center of learning in Baghdad to where scholars were travel for learning.
