11.3 Flashcards
Whats the two truss type constructions ?
Pratt truss
Warren truss
Whats the difference between Pratt and warren truss ?
- Pratt truss have wire type diagonal members rather than rigid tubes which warren truss have.
What carry’s the load in a monocoque fuselage ?
The skin,
- skin has its strength from being thicker and not by the application of other supports.
Whats the two types of doors ?
Plug type
Non-plug type
Describe a plug type door ?
-Seals itself keeping a pressure difference on its two sides ( inside and outside )
-The higher pressure forces door into wedge-shaped door into the frame establishing a seal and preventing it from. Being opened until pressure is released.
Describe non-plug type door ?
-designed to be opened inwards which isn’t suitable for cargo doors as there is not enough space for the door to swing inside.
What does a door structure consist of ?
Frame
Beams
Formers
Intercostals
Whats does door seals stop ?
Pressure leak
Light transmission
Noice transmission
Thermal transmission
Aerodynamic smoothness
What are door seals held in place by ?
Adhesive compounds, screws
Whats the 4 seal types ?
Bulb type
Diaphragm seals
Flap-type seals
Multiform seals
Why must cockpit door be lovable and made from reinforced construction ?
-Access is only possible if it is opened normally
-resistant to penetration or intrusion
Whats the 3 things a cockpit door can be made from?
Gas’s reinforced polymers
Kevlar
Laminates of high-strength glass fibre
Whats the flight deck door construction ?
-Lower part - decompression / evacuation flap
-Above door ( cabinet side ) - decompression flap
-spyhole
( incase flight deck is depressurised, cockpit door opens. )
What type of door is most emergency exit hatches ?
Plug-type door
( can be opened from inside and outside )
What must the ground operator ensure before opening cabin door ?
That the “CABIN PRESSURE” indicator / light is not lit red.
What can be used to prevent the movement of the actuators holding the cargo door ?
Safety gags
What must an engineer ensure when working with the emergency exit slide ?
That a pin is inserted into the armed / disarmed leaver to minimise accidental nudge and setting off the slide.
Whats a counterbalance spring operational purpose on a bulk cargo door ?
Takes the weight from the door incase of the door failure.
Whats the layers of a passenger window ?
1 Doubler
2 Aircraft skin
3 Doubler
4 Window frame
5 Outer plane
6 Inner seal
7 Inner plane
Whats passenger plug type passenger windows made from ?
Acrylic plastic
How is the window frame fastened to the aircraft skin ?
Riveted
How are cabin windows installed to the window frame ?
Sealed from the inner side
Whats the use of the small vent hole in an aircraft’s window ?
Ensures that the pressure between the panes is the same as the cabin pressure
What’s the two forward windows in a cockpit known as ?
Windscreen
Whats flight deck windows on transport aircraft usually constructed from ?
Laminations of tempered glass and plastic
Why may you heat the cockpit windows ?
-Make them more resistant to impact breakage.
-Anti ices the windows
Whats the 3 common wing attachment methods ?
Full cantilever
Semi cantilever
Wire braces
Whats the most common material used in construction of the wing ?
Aluminium
( modern aircraft beginning to use composite )
Whats the wing construction based on ?
Mono - spar ( utilises one main spanwise member )
Multi - spar ( utilises more than one spanwise member )
Box beam ( uses two main longitudinal members with connecting bulkheads )
Where is the main gear attachment point ?
Rear spar or false spar which is attached to the rear spar.
What are pylons designed to reduce ?
Air resistance ( drag )
( designed to be aerodynamic )
Where are ailerons attached to ?
Wing rear spar
Where are elevators attached to ?
Horizontal stabiliser rear spar
What are rudders attached to ?
Vertical stabiliser ( fin ) rear spar
What are spoilers attached to ?
Wing rear spar
What are flap tracks attached to ?
Rear wing spar
What are leading edge slat tracks attached to ?
Front wing spar
Whats the two methods to apply sealant to an aircraft’s fuselage ?
- Faying seal
- Fillet seal
Whats faying sealant used for ?
Two overlapping pieces of metal that are being joined
Whats fillet seal used for ?
When two pieces of metal are joined together.
Where is the attachment point for the landing gear ?
Wing spars or framework reached to the spar
How can you detect delamination in a cockpit window ?
Look at the cockpit from a angle and the delaminated part will appear as a shiny, flat bubble
What can bubbles in the vinyl layer indicate ?
There is a problem with the heater control system.
What damage would require the cockpit window to be changed ?
Cracks or chips in the inner glass pane
Cracks in the outer glass pane
Cracks in the vinyl ply
Scratches more than0.002 inch in depth.
What damage can result in the passenger window to be replaced ?
Crazing
Cracking
Scratches
Chips
( if extent exceeds the manufactures limit, you must replace )
Whats the three designs for the construction of an aircraft’s wing ?
Mono-spar = only has one longitudinal member
Multi-spar = has more than one longitudinal member
Box beam = two main longitudinal member.
How many engine mounts are there on a turbofan engine ?
2
FWD, AFT
How is a reciprocating engine mounted to the fuselage ?
Engine mount structure made from steel.
( v-struts )
Does the top or bottom bolts of the engine mount, support a reciprocating engine while on the ground ?
Top
( when aircraft is airborne, a torsional stress is added and effects all bolts )
Whats the section called where the engine is attached ?
Engine mount ring
How is the engine attached to the mount ?
Dynafocal mounts
( reduces the vibration passed from engine to the fuselage )
