A

Force which tries to extend the circumference of the aircraft.
TWO TYPES -
( axial force on front and rear bulkheads )

Q

What is it meat by the concept “fail safe” ?

A

Duplication of certain structural members to ensure tat if one member fails, the other would assume the load of the failed member.

9
Q

Whats it meant by the concept “safe - life components” ?

A

Predication of how long a structure can remain in service before reaching the point of fatigue damage. Can be determined with engine hours or flight cycles.

19
Q

Which side of the aircraft is the odd and even number for a sub-major zone ?

A

Left - odd
Right - even

20
Q

Whats the purpose of station identification system ?

A

Points on aircraft identified by coordinates system.
( like bus station. Gives specific location )
( measured form a datum )

21
Q

Where is the fuselage station measured from ?

A

Measured by the distance from a point in front of the nose of the aircraft.

22
Q

Whats a buttock line ?

A

Vertical plane parallel to the body ( fuselage ) centre line.

23
Q

Where is the wing station measured from ?

A

Measured from wing root rib

24
Q

Where are waterlines measured from ?

A

Right angle to the body station and buttock lines

25
Q

Whats fatigue stress ?

A

Cyclic loads.

26
Q

Why are drain holes placed into an aircraft’s structure ?

A

To allow ventilation and drainage of fluids which could have been built up.

27
Q

What stops pressurisation leak from happening through drain holes ?

A

Bilge-like valves are fitted and are also automatic
( wont open in air as will cause air leak so they automatically close when in air, but when on the ground and the aircraft’s depressurised, the valves automatically open and let any built up fluid out )

28
Q

Whats the possibility for a lightning strike in zone 1 and 2 ?

A

Zone 1 - highly possible
Zone 2 - possible.

29
Q

Why are aircraft bonded ?

A

To ensure that components using conductive Pathways have the same electrical potential which prevents static build-up.
( minimises risk of electrical arcing and interference with on-board electronic systems )

30
Q

What can doubles used as ?

A

Crack stoppers

31
Q

Where are doublers usually found ?

A

Around doors or windows

32
Q

Whats attached to the bottom of doors to protect it from damage from stairs and baggage machines ?

A

Kick plates

33
Q

What load does ties carry ?

A

Tension

34
Q

What load does struts carry ?

A

Compression

35
Q

What are cabin floor boards made from ?

A

Honey comb

36
Q

What load does the floor beam carry under pressurisation ?

A

Tension

37
Q

How many parts is a wing made from ?

A

3
Centre wing box
RH outer box
LH outer box

38
Q

Why is wing leading edge and leading edge of engine intakes etc not protected ?

A
39
Q

Whats the 3 types of wing construction ?

A

Truss type
Monocoque
Semi-monocoque

40
Q

What is a disadvantage of fail safe concept ?

A

It adds additional weight to the aircraft.

41
Q

What’s the 4 parts which construct an airframe ?

A

Stringer

42
Q

How can you check if the aircraft is misaligned?

A

Symmetry check

43
Q

Whats the three methods of cleaning an aircraft ?

A

Wet washing
Dry washing
Polishing

44
Q

What does a wet wash remove ?

A

Greases, oils
Not corrosive and oxide films )

45
Q

What does a dry wash remove ?

A

Dust / small accumulations of dirt
( use a spray, cloth )

46
Q

What does polishing remove ?

A

Oxidisation and corrosion
