11.10 Flashcards
Before fuel meets engines combustion chamber, or APU, what’s the 3 modifications done to it ?
—Pressurised
—Metered ( measure rate of fuel entering engine )
—Filtered
What must fuel tanks be constructed from ?
Materials which will not react chemically with any aviation fuel.
( has a sump and drain sat at the bottom to drain any water or contamination)
Why are furl systems fitted with baffles ?
To resist fuel surging caused by changes in the attitude of the aircraft.
What are fuel systems located in the cargo hold or horizontal stabiliser called ?
Auxiliary tanks.
What are the special cavities in the wing tip called to ensure the fuel tanks are proper ventilated ?
Vent / surge tanks.
What can sometimes be used to reduce the aircraft to its specified landing weight ?
Jettison valves.
What are rigid fuel lines made from ?
Stainless steel or aluminium alloy
( connects with MS or AN fittings )
Where are stainless steel rigid fuel lines mainly used ?
—Engine
—Wheel wells
( bonded clamps hold rigid fuel line in place )
What are the layers of construction to a flexible fuel line ?
Inner - synthetic tube
Middle - fibre braid
Outer - synthetic cover
( some hoses have a braided stainless steel exterior )
What is additionally placed over rigid and flexible fuel lines to provide extra protection ?
Abrasion and fire protection layer
Where are flexible hose lines mainly used ?
—High vibration areas ( between aircraft structure and engine )
Whats the two types of aviation fuel ?
—AVGAS ( reciprocating engines )
— jet fuel ( turbine engines )
- MUST NOT MIX
What the three turbine engine fuel types available ?
—jet A1
—jet A
—jet B
What colour is AVGAS 82 unleaded (UL) dyed ?
Purple
What colour is AVGAS 100 dyed ?
Green
What colour is AVGAS 100 Low Leaded ( LL ) dyed ?
Blue
What colour is jet fuel dyed ?
Colourless or straw colour
Whats the three types of fuel tanks ?
— rigid removable fuel tanks
— bladder furl tanks
— intergalactic fuel tanks
Explain an integral fuel tank ?
—Part of structure of wings
—contains access panels
—aircraft with integral tanks are known as “wet wing” aircraft.
Explain a rigid removable fuel tank ?
— strapped onto airframe structure
— Made from aluminium alloy or stainless steel
— requires large opening within aircraft skin for installation
Explain a bladder fuel tank ?
— made from flexible material
— doesn’t require removal of aircraft skin for installation.
— must sit on support board to stop it from sitting on ribs etc
— used on all sizes of aircraft.
— if leaks, engineer can patch hole up.
Whats the use of the nitrogen generating system ( NGS ) ?
To improve safety by reducing the risk of a fuel tank explosion by replacing the oxygen in the system with nitrogen.
( replaces oxygen with Nitrogen-enriched air through the Air Separation Module ( ASM )
Whats the process of NGS ?
1 —systems sources compressed hot air from engine
2— hot air from engine is then cooled before entering ASM which increases efficiency of separation
3—cooled air is passed through filter to remove contaminants which protects ASM
4—filtered air enters ASM and separation process begins.
5—nitrogen enriched air is then directed to aircraft’s fuel tanks
6—oxygen which is separated is vented overboard
( nitrogen should constantly be fed into the tanks which displaces the outside air that enters )
( pressure valves control the rate of nitrogen that enters the tank to ensure tits not overfilled )
When a component is replaced or reassembled following maintenance, should you re-use the gasket previously fitted to that component ?
NO. You should not re-use and should replace instead.
( gasket can be used to repair a leak )
Whats the 4 classifications used to describe the severity of an aircraft fuel leak ?
1- stain
2- steep
3- heavy seep
4- running leak
( monitor for 30 minuets )
Explain the rule of fuel tank safety SFAR 88 ?
Requires the inspection of the designed fuel systems and their components, as well as the development of special inspections and maintenance procedures.
Explain the fuel tank safety rule CDCCL
Ensures unsafe conditions do not develop.
( mandatory and cannot be changed without approval from FAA )
