MAINFRAME COMPUTER
Large, powerful computer. Does multiple complicated jobs quickly, can be used by many people at the same time.
MICROPROCESSOR
Controls what computer does. Takes data as input, does something with it, provides output.
FEATURES OF A DESKTOP
Has more space for components than laptops. Provides option to upgrade and add additional components. Usually needs peripheral devices (monitor, printer, mouse, keyboard)
PERIPHERAL DEVICES
Equipment connected to the computer and used with it.
FEATURES OF A LAPTOP
Includes keyboard, screen, track pad, rechargeable battery. Portable.
SINGLE BOARD COMPUTERS (SBCs)
Affordable computers used in education. Does embedded computing projects and physical computing projects.
EMBEDDED COMPUTING
Computing hardware fixed into position carrying out a specialist task.
PHYSICAL COMPUTING
Interactive systems. Can sense and respond to the world around it.
FEATURES OF MOBILE PHONE
More portable than a tablet, make calls, good battery life. Uses SIM card to connect to a mobile phone network.
FEATURES OF TABLET
Larger screen than phone, better sound, more durable.
SIM
Subscriber Identity Module. Used to identify subscriber to a mobile network.
SPECIALIST PHONE

Mobile phones with specialist features, providing function which meets particular needs
CAMERAS + CAMCORDERS
Uses light sensors to capture images formed by light passing through device’s lens. CAMERAS - capture still images. CAMCORDERS - capture video/ moving images.
BENEFITS OF HAVING BETTER FEATURES IN CAMERAS + CAMCORDERS
- GOOD LENS = Light travelling through without defects. Allows user to control amount of light passing through.
- GOOD IMAGE PROCESSOR = Compensating for poor lighting conditions. Digital images are made up of small dots (pixels)
- BETTER QUALITY SENSORS = More details captures. Images with more pixels are produced.
TELEVISION
Resolution of TV in pizels is horizontal pixels x vertical pixels.
Displays still and moving images on a screen. Most TVs come with built in speakers. HD (high definition) TVs contain larger number of pixels = higher resolution. UHD (ultra high definition) is referred to as 8k/4k because horizontal resolution = 4000/8000.
