What is residential segregation?
Groups of pp separate into different neighborhoods
What is class consciousness? ?
Workers realize they have solidarity with one another and struggle to overcome this oppression and exploitation
what is false consciousness?
unlike class consciousness, workers are unable to see their oppression.
Why is socioeconomic status a pyramid?
As we go up the social pyramid, access, and quality of healthcare improves
The opposite is true for those at the bottom of the pyramid.
what is social reproduction?
Transmission of social inequality from one generation to the next
What is social capital? Cultural capital
_ networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society–> health ( peer, family, community)
_ non-financial assets that promote social mobility beyond economic means.
What is the theory of intersectionality?
multiple forms of discrimination at the same time.
Ex: social class+ race
What is social stratification?
society’s categorization of people in socioeconomic data based on occupation/wealth/power
What is vertical/horizontal movement?
Vertical: server to manager
Horizontal: move within the same class. switch job to different accounting companies.
What is meritocracy?
Concept that pp believe social position based solely on abilities and achievements (Merits)–> equal opportunities.
Intergenerational vs intragenerational
Inter: change in social class happens in a person’s own lifetime

Relative vs absolute poverty?
an absolute level at which you go below, survival is threatened ( refer to developing countries)
relative poverty: different marker: % level below the median income / not about survival/ developed countries
What is social exclusion?
certain individuals are excluded from the society due to
poverty magnet/ ill-health magnet/ discrimination magnet
What is social isolation?
when community voluntarily isolates itself from the mainstream, based on their religious/cultural/ other beliefs:
