10.7 Adaptations Flashcards
what is an adaptation?
characteristics which increase an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction
what are the three types of adaptation?
anatomical
behavioural
physiological
anatomical
physical features
behavioural
the way an organism acts
physiological
processes which take place inside an organism
examples of anatomical adaptations
body coverings to keep warm
camouflage to hide from predators
sharp teeth to kill
examples of behavioural adaptations
playing dead
courtship to attract a mate
migration and hibernation
what is migration?
when animals move from one region to another for a better climate and source of food
what is hibernation?
period of inactivity when body temp, heart rate and breathing rate slow down to conserve energy
what are the two types of behavioural adaptations?
innate
learned
innate behaviour
behaviour inherited through genes
learned behaviour
behaviour learnt from experience or observation
examples of physiological adaptations
poison production to kill
antibiotic production
what are analogous structures?
structures which perform the same role but look very different
what is convergent evolution?
when two species evolve similar characteristics independently from each other
