Q

How does the location of the carcinoid tumor affect symptoms

A

Carcinoid tumors commonly arise from small intestine. If localized the carcinoid syndrome (flushing, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bronchospasms) will not occur as the secretory products (serotonin, bradykinin, PG’s ) will be metabolized in the liver. Once metastasis to the liver occurs carcinoid syndrome appears.
