1 Heme/Onc T Flashcards
What is a key feature of acute intermediate porphyria
Reddish urine which turns brown upon exposure to air
Treatment of multiple myeloma and the mechanism
Bortezomib - a boronia-acid containing peptide which inhibits proteosomes causing a toxic accumulation within the MM cells
What type of protein does MDMR1 code for
A P-glycoprotein ATP-transporter
What is an alternative treatment for SCD besides hydroxyurea
Grades channel blockers - block Ca-dependent-K-channels to prevent dehydration to prevent sickling
What type of cancer is H. pylori associated with
MALT lymphoma
How does the location of the carcinoid tumor affect symptoms
Carcinoid tumors commonly arise from small intestine. If localized the carcinoid syndrome (flushing, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bronchospasms) will not occur as the secretory products (serotonin, bradykinin, PG’s ) will be metabolized in the liver. Once metastasis to the liver occurs carcinoid syndrome appears.
What are the symptoms of carcinoid syndrome
flushing, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bronchospasms
What are the secretory products of a carcinoid tumor
serotonin, bradykinin, PG’s
An indolent NH lymphoma with varying waxing and waning cycles
follicular lymphoma; 14:18 translocation
Vincristine mechanism of action and toxicity
Acts by binding to Beta-tubulin blocking M phase; causes peripheral neuropathy
What is Li-Fraumeni syndrome and what is the gene
An autosomal dominant predisposition to forming cancers via a p53 mutation; TP53
What enzyme breaks down heme
heme oxygenase
What is the profession of colors in a bruise
Blue/Purple (RBCs); Green (biliverdin); Yellow (bilirubin)
CCl4 mechanism of injury
free radical formation
Most common childhood brain tumor and location
pilocytic astrocytoma in cerebellum; has both solid and cystic components
