05b. The structures and functions of the Tongue Flashcards
Which structure is A?
Papillae
Which structure is B?
taste pore
Which structure is C?
Taste bud/s
Which structure is A?
Taste bud
Which structure is B?
Gustatory receptor
Which structure is C?
Facial cranial nerve/s
Which structure is D?
Gustatory hairs
What is the function of A?
lumps on surface of tongue- create grooves to collect tastants (chemical molecules combined with saliva) so that this can be directed down taste pores and towards gustatory receptors.
What is the function of B?
Contains taste buds which contain taste receptor cells- function of taste pores is to collect tastants and direct them towards taste buds
What is the function of C?
Taste buds contain gustatory receptors which are responsible for both receiving and transducing taste information
What is the function of B?
Process and transduce taste information (FROM chemical stimulus/tastant INTO electrochemical message/neural impulse)
What is the function of D?
Gustatory hairs collect tastant and bring it into the taste bud for processing (from the taste pore)
What is the function of C?
Facial cranial nerves transmit neural information about taste that has been transduced. The facial cranial nerves connect the tongue and the brain (primary gustatory cortex)
Which region of the brain processes gustatory information?
Primary gustatory cortex
Which three lobes of the brain is the primary gustatory cortex found underneath?
Frontal, parietal and temporal lobes.
