05.2 Hypoxia and Respiratory Failure Flashcards
1
Q
What is anaemia?
A
Low Hb
Normal PO2
2
Q
What is type 1 respiratory failure?
A
Hypoxia
Carbon dioxide removal not compromised
3
Q
What is type 2 respiratory failure?
A
Hypoxia
Hypercapnia
4
Q
What can cause type 2 respiratory failure?
A
Hypoventilation Respiratory depression (head injuries/narcotics) Muscle weakness Chest wall problems e.g. Scoliosis Stiff lungs - fibrosis Severe asthma/COPD
5
Q
What can cause type 1 respiratory failure?
A
Problems with alveolar membrane (emphysema, pulmonary oedema, fibrosis) VQ mismatch (pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, asthma, COPD, respiratory distress syndrome)
6
Q
How do you treat type 1 respiratory failure?
A
O2 therapy
7
Q
How do your treat type 2 respiratory failure?
A
Assisted ventilation
8
Q
What is hypoxaemia?
A
Respiratory hypoxia
Low PO2 and low O2 saturation
Due to poor oxygenation at the lungs
