01.3 Reapiratory System Histology Flashcards
What is the respiratory portion?
Respiratory bronchioles to the alveoli.
What are two structural differences between bronchi and bronchioles?
Bronchial walls contain cartilage
Bronchi contains submucosal glands
What is radial tension?
The elastic tissue in the alveolar walls exert an outward tugging action on bronchioles to help keep them open.
(This is what can cause narrowing of bronchioles in emphysema)
What is the epithelia from the nasal cavity to the bronchioles?
Pseudostratified ciliated epithelium with goblet cells.
What type of epithelia is in the alveoli?
Simple squamous epithelium
What is the epithelia in the terminal bronchioles?
Simple columnar ciliated epithelium with Clara cells.
What is the epithelia in the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts?
Simple cuboidal epithelium with Clara cells.
What is the purpose of the non olfactory regions in the nasal cavity?
Alternate blood flow via the swelling of venous plexuses.
What is the purpose of olfactory regions of the nasal cavity?
Sense of smell
What is the difference in the epithelia between non olfactory and olfactory regions of the nasal cavity?
There are no goblet cells in the olfactory regions
What do Clara cells secrete?
Surfactant
Clara cell protein
What happens to Clara cell protein when the lung is damaged?
Lowered.
What is the conducting portion?
Nasal cavity to the bronchioles
