04.1 Oxygen in the Blood Flashcards
When is haemoglobin in the R state?
When PO2 is high
What shape is an oxygen saturation curve?
Sigmoidal
What can cause an oxygen dissociation curve to shift to the right?
Low pH
Increased temperature
2-3 BPG
What happens to Hb in CO poisoning?
Increases the affinity of unaffected subunits.
Hb is either not saturated or cannot give up O2 at the tissues.
How can oxygen levels in the blood be measured?
Pulse oximetry
Arterial blood gas
What is pulse oximetry?
Detects the Hb saturation in pulsatile (arterial) blood by using wavelengths to measure the difference in HbO2 and Hb
What can pulse oximetry not tell you?
How much Hb is present in total (may be anaemic)
What is an ABG?
Arterial blood gas
Measures the partial pressures of gas dissolved in plasma
When is haemoglobin in the T state?
When PO2 is low
