009 Pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus Flashcards
1
Q
How does diabetic ketoacidosis occur?
A
- No prescence of insulin; glucagon is unopposed
- Tricks body into starvation mode
- Results in gluconeogenesis, glycolysis, lipolysis
- Fatty acids are converted to ketones in the liver
- Ketones are very acidic which lowers pH
2
Q
What are Kimmelstein wilson nodules?
A
Glomerular sclerosis, which is pink hyaline material.
3
Q
Which residue does glucose form schiff bases with on proteins?
A
Lysine
4
Q
How does diabetes affect superoxide dismutase?
A
Glycosylate superoxide dismutase, removing superoxide anions as byproduct of metabolism. This is inhibited.
5
Q
How does diabetes affect the glutathione redox cycle?
A
Prevents this glutathione from removing hydrogen peroxide, which causes more protein damage especially in presence of metals.
