Q

What are characteristics of Trichinella spirialis?

A

2 groups = encapsulated + non-encapsulated
*Intracellular nematode

*No eggs or larvae in faeces
*Females = larviparous - L1 newborn larvae (NBL)
*Infective stage = L1 - muscle larvae (ML)

Q

What is the life cycle of Trichinella spirialis?

A

*Encysted larvae ingested
*Rapid development L1->L5 in SI
*NBL migrate in blood + lymphatics to skeletal muscle + invade = muscle larvae (ML)
*Nurse cell = Muscle cell infected by single ML - L1 grows but doesn’t moult + remains viable for several years

Q

What does Trichinella spirialis cause?

A

*No disease in domestic animals - Severe disease in humans
*Sources = pigs + horses, game meat + arctic animals
*Typical symptoms = Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, chills + peri-orbital oedema
*Severe cases = myocarditis, encephalitis, secondary infections (pneumonia) + death

15
Q

What is the life cycle of cystoisospora suis?

A

*Typical coccidal life cycle
*Infection = ingestion of sporulated oocyst
*SI = 2 rounds of asexual reproduction
*Sexual reproduction = micro + macrogametocytes = zygote = oocyst

16
Q

How is Cystoisospora suis diagnosed?

A

*Clinical signs - cocci
*Low / negative oocyst count

17
Q

What is the treatment of cystoisospora suis?

A

*Sulphonamides
*Toltrazuril

18
Q

How is Cystoisospora suis infection controlled?

A

*Good hygiene
-indoor = removing contaminating oocyst from environment - Lime washing
-outdoor = arcs moved between consecutive farrowings + boards avoided

19
Q

What is the species of Sarcoptes in pigs?

A

Sarcoptes scabiei var suis

20
Q

What are the clinical signs of Sarcoptes in pigs?

A

*Lesions start around ears, spread to back, flanks + abdomen
*Severe immune reaction, pruritis + erythema
*Intense itching, thickened skin, head shaking + secondary bacterial infections

21
Q

How is sarcoptes transmitted?

A

Direct contact - sow to piglet

22
Q

How is Sarcoptes in pigs treated/prevented/controlled?

A

*Treat + prevent = MLs -in feed / injectable
*Cleaning + disinfecting wooden + concrete surfaces

23
Q

What is the only louse found in pigs? + where is it found? + characteristics?

A

Haematopinus suis
*Found around the ears + skin folds of upper legs
*Large - 5-6mm
Eggs to adult = 4weeks

24
Q

What do haematopinus suis cause in pigs?

A

*Itching
*Reduced feed intake + growth rate
*Anaemia
*Can spread viral infections

25
Q

How is haematopinus suis infestation treated? + controlled?

A

*MLs - in feed/injectable
*Cleaning + disinfecting wooden + concrete surfaces
