Strongyles 2 Flashcards
What species are large strongyles?
Strongylus spp.
What are examples of strongylus species and their size?
S. edentatus, S. equinus = 2.5-5cm
S. vulgaris = 1.5-2.5cm
What is the life cycle of a large strongyle?
*Direct
*Migratory
*Eggs develop to L3 on pasture -Typical strongyle eggs
*L3 Migrate to mesenteric arteries, liver, pancreas + hepatic ligaments
*Mature to adults in lumen of large intestines
What species of strongyle migrate to cranial mesenteric arteries? What is its PPP?
S. vulgaris
PPP = 6 months
What species of strongyle migrates to the liver and then to the pancreas?
What is its PPP?
S. equinus
PPP = 8 months
What species of strongyle migrates to the flanks and hepatic ligaments?
What is its PPP?
S. edentatus
PPP = 10 months
How are the strongyles identified?
X40 magnification - buccal cavity seen
What causes disease with large stongyles? What species causes most disease?
Larvae migrating - S. vulgaris is most significant in term of disease
What can migrating L4 of strongylus vulgaris cause?
Non-strangulating infarction in cranial mesenteric arteries
What worm may contribute to damage caused by other worms but rarely pathogenic on their own? What size are their eggs?
Triodontophorus spp
*Eggs = 2x size of other strongyle eggs
