A

A

It is distributed to help the needy within the Muslim community as well as being used for religious purposes.

Why is it not considered charity giving?

A

Because Muslims believe it is simply the sharing of the wealth given by Allah, and all Muslims have a right to share this. A Muslim who receives money from zakah should not feel lessened by it, but instead blessed by Allah.

Who did Shi’as continue to pay khums to?

A

To Muhammad’s successor and, after him, to the subsequent Imams. Now that the 12th Imam is in occultation, the khums are collected and distributed on his behalf by the leading religious scholars.

They believe that anyone who keeps the money that they should have paid to khums is then in possession of money that is haram (forbidden).
