A

A

The festival remembers the time when Allah provided a ram for Ibrahim to sacrifice instead of his son Isma’il.

What do Muslims do to prepare for the festival?

A
  • An animal is selected for sacrifice
  • Bismallah (a blessing) is said over it - ‘In the name of Allah the merciful, the compassionate’
  • Once the animal has been sacrificed, the meat is roasted and divided into 3 portions.

Complete wudu and offer a prayer, Salah al-Fajr. The festival begins with prayers offered, usually at the mosque, and the delivery of a khutbah (sermon) by the Imam.

A

Id prayers may also be offered in an open-air gathering place known as an Eidgah. After this Muslims will exchange the traditional greeting of ‘Id Mubarek’ and give gifts and cards to each other.

A

It is a demonstration of Muslims’ willingness to make sacrifices for Allah. It is also an opportunity for them to be thankful to Allah for his provision.
