What is Id-ul-Adha?
The ‘Festival of Sacrafice’, which happens at the end of hajj.
What does the festival remember?
The festival remembers the time when Allah provided a ram for Ibrahim to sacrifice instead of his son Isma’il.
What do Muslims do to prepare for the festival?
- An animal is selected for sacrifice
- Bismallah (a blessing) is said over it - ‘In the name of Allah the merciful, the compassionate’
- Once the animal has been sacrificed, the meat is roasted and divided into 3 portions.
What are the 3 portions the animal is divided into?
- 1/3 is kept by the family
- 1/3 is given to friends and relatives
- the final portion is given to the poor and needy
What do Muslims do at the start of the festival?
Complete wudu and offer a prayer, Salah al-Fajr. The festival begins with prayers offered, usually at the mosque, and the delivery of a khutbah (sermon) by the Imam.
What else happens during the festival?
Id prayers may also be offered in an open-air gathering place known as an Eidgah. After this Muslims will exchange the traditional greeting of ‘Id Mubarek’ and give gifts and cards to each other.
What is the significance of the festival?
It is a demonstration of Muslims’ willingness to make sacrifices for Allah. It is also an opportunity for them to be thankful to Allah for his provision.
What does it help to develop?
The sense of ummah, both in gathering together for prayers and through the distribution of the meat.
What is this festival a sign of support for?
Sign of support for those who are on hajj and completing their animal sacrifice near Mecca.
