Id-ul-Ghadeer Flashcards
What and when is Id-ul-Ghadeer?
A Shi’a festival on the 18th of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. This day on which the prophet Muhammad delivered his last sermon.
What do Shi’as believe happens on this day?
Muhammad appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor.
What happened when Muhammad was travelling to Medinah?
Part of the Qur’an, now known as the ‘verse of announcement’, was revealed to him.
What does the verse of announcement say?
The verse of announcement says that in order for Muhammad to fulfil his mission as the prophet of Allah, he has an important message to proclaim.
What did Muhammad do after this revelation?
Muhammad stopped his journey back to Medinah at a place called Ghadir Khumm. It was here that he made a speech in which Shi’a Muslims believe Ali was given authority to lead the Muslims.
What happened after this?
Muhammad ordered a tent to be set up for Ali to sit in while Muslims came to him to pledge their allegiance to him as Muhammad’s successor.
Why do Sunnis not accept this interpretation?
They argue that Muhammad was calling for Ali to be respected but not to be seen as his successor. They do not celebrate this event.
What do Shi’as do as part of this event?
In celebration, they will perform wudu or take a full bath early in the morning. They will complete specific prayers at the mosque. Often the account of the event is narrated in mosques as a reminder.
Why is this festival significant to Shi’a Muslims?
It allows them to re-affirm their commitment to their first Imam, Ali.
