What are the main components of an X-ray tube
Tube insert -
Tube housing/shield - protection from radiation & electrical hazards
Light-beam diaphragm - protection from radiation
How are X-ray photons produced
Produced when fast-moving electrons (accelerated by cathode) are suddenly stopped by the impact with the anode
The kinetic energy of electrons is converted into X-ray photons and into heat
What is thermionic emission
Electrons emitted from cathode:
Material heated so KE of atoms increases. Outer electrons are more loosely bound so when collisions occur some electrons are liberated leaving the material with a + charge
What happens if you increase the tube current
The number of liberated electrons increases
