Culture
set of learned value, belief, customs and practices that are shared by a group and are passed from one generation to another
Sub-culture
share many characteristics w the primary culture but has characteristic patterns of behavior and ideals that distinguish it from the rest of a cultural group
Stereotype
a generalized expectation about forms of behavior
Ethnic Stereotype
fixed concept of how all members of an ethnic group think or act
ethnocentrism
believing your cultural beliefs are best
cultural competence
able to nurse effectively within all cultures
Orthodox
- no dairy/meat on same plate
- no pork
- animal killed ritually
- no shellfish
- babies names 8 days after birth by father

- husband can not touch menstruating women

can only discus abstinence or rhythm method, no other birth control
Islam
- autopsy forbidden
- female patients prefer female care providers
- dont expose large areas of body

- undergarments sacred to them, don’t remove.
- no caffeine, tobacco

no too much direct eye contact
