Wrong Direction Movements Flashcards
What makes a wrong direction movement a wrong direction movement?
Wrong direction movement for which no signal or signalled route is provided.
Before authorising a wrong direction movement, what must you make sure of to make sure the line is safe? (5)
- Barriers at any controlled level crossing are closed.
- Any AHBC without wrong direction controls is locally operated.
- All points are in the required position and locked by facing point locks (where provided).
- Any unworked points are secured.
- Any ground frame release giving access to the route is normal.
Before the wrong direction movement takes place, what distance must you make sure that the line is clear for, beyond the signal or place to which the movement is required to proceed, and what is the distance called? (2)
- 400m
- Clearance distance
What must you agree with the driver of an OTM that is to work in section, and it will be necessary to make wrong direction movements up to or towards the published mileage of the start of the site of work? (3)
- How far the movement can go.
- Any instructions that the driver must carry out.
- The supervisor or person in charge can authorise the driver to make each movement.
What must you tell the driver when instructing them about the wrong direction movement? (6)
- What is required.
- How far the movement can go.
- Check points and crossings are set correctly.
- Any unworked points have been secured.
- To proceed at caution.
- The arrangements at level crossings.
What must a driver do at all times when crossing over an ABCL? (2)
- Make sure it is safe to do so.
- Sound the horn continuously until the front of the train is on the crossing.
What must drivers do with any AWS indications they receive during a wrong direction movement? (1)
Disregard and cancel any warning indication.
If there is no attendant at a CCTV level crossing, where must the driver be instructed to stop, before being authorised to cross over the level crossing? (1)
Opposite the signal or block marker protecting the crossing on the other line.
You must not allow any conflicting movement to take place within the clearance distance until the movement has cleared the section of the line, you do not need to carry out this instruction if the movement is proceeding: (5)NO CLEARANCE DISTANCE NEEDED
- To a stationary train or vehicle.
- To the point of obstruction.
- To the detonators protecting a possession.
- To the first or last work site marker board protecting a T3 possession.
- Beyond the point at which it will return to a line in the right direction.
Authority for a wrong direction movement (12)

- A train to return after taking a wrong route at a junction.
- A train to return from or proceed towards a line blocked by an accident, failure or obstruction.
- A train cannot continue forward and has to return because it has failed.
- A light locomotive or multiple unit train is to proceed over the affected or unaffected line to assist failed train.
- An engineering train to move towards or from a line under possession.
- An engineering train or OTM is working in a protection zone.

- A rail grinding train to return to extinguish a line side fire.
- Single line working is in operation.
- A Front portion of a divided train to return to the rear portion.
- Shunting movement is to be made through points that are worked from a ground frame.
