Antithesis
-Juxtaposes two or more elements/qualities in a combination
Parallelism
- Bring together similar components or aspects of the same object/issue and use same structure
- Used with nouns, verbs, adjectives
Appeal to ethos/logos/pathos
Original, basic techniques to employ when creating a speech, persuasive or argumentative papers
Pathos
Appeal to unsubstantiated emotional claims
Ethos
Appeal to ethical side of the issue; argue degree of appropriateness to society
Logos
Appeal through research data, references to credible sources as logical support for argument
Historical Analogy
- Illuminate historical situations and compare to current events, find similarity
- Create prognosis when necessary
- writer can use metaphorical analogy as well as contrast
Enthymeme
- Two part thesis
- Begins with an assertion (answers a question)
- Follow with a because (reason in support of answer)
Rhetorical question
Question used for effect, emphasis, provocation, or for drawing conclusionary statement from facts at hand
Exemplum
- Citing an example, using illustrative story
- Introduced with “For example”, “A case in point”, etc
Euphemism
Substitution of an agreeable or non-offensive expression for one whose plainer meaning might be harsh
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for emphasis or rhetorical effect
Paradox
Assertion seemingly opposed to common sense, yet contains truth
