Masculine rhyme
- Single rhyme
- Rhyme in which the repeated accented vowel sound involves only one syllable
Feminine rhyme
A rhyme in which the repeated accented vowel sound involves two or more syllables
Prose poem
Short composition having the intentions of poetry but written in prose rather than verse
Rhetorical stress
In natural speech, as in prose and poetic writing, the stressing of words or syllables so as to emphasize meaning and sentence structure
Free verse
Non-metrical poetry in which the basic rhythmic unit is the line, and in which pauses, line breaks, and formal patterns develop organically from the requirements of the poem rather than from established poetic forms
Euphony
Smooth, pleasant-sounding choice and arrangement of sounds
Cacophony
Harsh, discordant, unpleasant-sounding choice and arrangement of sounds
Synesthesia
Presentation of one sense experience in terms usually associated with another sensation
Villanelle
- Complex pattern of repetition and rhyme second in rank to the sonnet as a fixed poetic structure
