Elegy
Dignified poem mourning death of an individual
Anticlimax (bathos)
Sinking effect created when reader, full of lofty expectations, finds only something trivial, deflating, or even comical
Picaresque
Narrative depicting life of a “picaro” or rogue whose knavery implicates him in adventures which take him from one social class to another
Canto
Sub division of a long poem, corresponding to a chapter in a book
Restoration Comedy/Comedy of Manners
Elaborate, witty comedies set in aristocratic Restoration world
Mock Epic
Work in which trivial subject is made ridiculous by being treated with elaborate and dignified devices of the epic
Pastoral
Literature which concerns country life
Epigram
Short usually witty statement, graceful in style and ingenious in thought
Periodical Essay
Thoughtful, often satiric, journalistic essay
Antithesis
Pointed juxtaposition of opposite or contrary elements
