Wrist joint Flashcards
describe the 3 radioulnar joints
proximal-annular-pivot type
middle-interosseous membrane
distal-round head of ulna, notch of radius, radioulnar ligament
what movements are allowed at the radioulnar joints
pronation/supination
What bones are involved in the radiocarpal (Wrist) joint?
radius articulates with scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum
What ligaments provide stability to the wrist joint
ulnar collateral ligaments-ulnar styloid to triquetrum
radial collateral ligament-radial styloid to scaphoid
What provides stability at the MCP, PIP and DIP
Transverse metacarpal ligament
metacarpophalangeal collateral ligaments
phalangeal collateral ligaments
what movements can the wrist do
flexion extension
abd add
rotation (all 4)
What ligament creates the carpal tunnel?
transverse carpal ligament
What is contained in the carpal tunnel?
median n. and 9 tendons
flexor digitorum superficialis t.
flexor digitorum profundus t.
flexor pollicis longus t.
What ligament creates the ulnar tunnel? contents?
palmar carpal ligament
ulnar n. and a.
what causes carpal tunnel syndrome? sx?
compression of median n due to overuse
neuropathy, muscle atropha in thenar
heal with rest or surgery
which carpal bone is most commonly fractured? why?
scaphoid, largest interface with radius
Why doesnt the ulna fracture often?
all the weight is put on the radius cause the ulna has no articulation with the wrist
describe a colles fracture. how would this person fall? where would their fracture displace the distal radius? xray appearance?
FOOSH, hyperextended wrist
moves distal radius posteriorly/dorsally (wrist is gonna move in direction hand is bending)
“dinner fork”
describe a smiths fracture. how would this person fall? where would their fracture displace the distal radius? xray appearance?
FOOSH, hyperflexed wrist
moves distal radius anteriorly/ventrally
“shovel deformity”
what is a swan neck deformity?
extension of PIP, flexion of DIP
caused by rheumatoid arthritis/untreated mallet finger
