Hand Flashcards
What motions are possible at the wrist and hand?
flexion/extension
abduction/adduction
What motions are possible at the MPJ?
flexion and extension
abduction/adduction
What motions are possible at the PIP and DIP joints?
flexion/extension
What motions are possible at the thumn?
flexion/extension
abduction/adduction
opposition
What is Dupuytrens contracture?
sx:painless thickening of fibrous tissue (palmar fascia) underneath palm
cause: unknown, possibly alcohol and diabetes
can restrict motion of hand if bad
What are the carpal bones?
scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform
hamate, capitate, trapezoid, trapezium
What is the function of synovial sheaths in the wrist and hand?
cover flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons to provide lubrication
the ulnar bursa is continuous with the synovial sheath of the pinky
What are the thenar muscles of the hand? What nerve innervates them?
abductor pollicis brevis
opponins pollicis
flexor pollicis brevis (superficial head)
recurrent branch of median n.
deep head
adductor pollicis transvers/oblique
deep branch of ulnar n.
What are the hypothenar muscles of the hand? what nerve?
abductor digiti minimi
flexor digiti minimi brevis
opponens digiti minimi
ulnar n.
What are the deep intrinsic muscles? what nerve?
lumbricals 1,2 median. 3, 4 deep ulnar
palmar interossei
dorsal interossei
deep ulnar n.
What muscles does the recurrent branch of median n innervate?
1/2 LOAFs lateral 2 lumbricals opponins pollicis abductor pollicis brevis flexor pollicis brevis (superficial head)
Explain the extensor hood mechanism
I think when the fingers are extended it allows the lumbricals to contribute to extension and vice versa
What are the branches of the radial artery in the hand?
deep palmar arch mostly
little bit superficial palmar arch
What are the branches of the ulnar artery in the hand?
superficial palmar arch
deep communicating branch
