Wound Healing Flashcards
How wound heals depends on ….
the tissue loss that occurs
edges of wound are approximated and light pulled together; wound w/ minimal tissue loss like clean surgical incisions/ sutured wounds
primary intention- infection risk is lowest
wounds w/ full tissue loss like deep lacerations, pressure ulcers, burns, edges not well approximated and scarring occurs; heals from inside out
secondary intention
healing that happens when a delay occurs between injury and wound closure; happens w. wounds that are purposely left open
tertiary intention
Wound separation
dehiscence
protrusion of viscera through that wound opening.
evisceration
Systemic factors effecting wound healing
Malnutrition
Circulation
Fragile skin
Decreased turgor
decreased antibodies
chronic diseases
a clear to yellow fluid that leaks from a wound with tissue damage
serous drainage
fresh blood that leaks from an open wound
sanguineous drainage
a thick, opaque fluid that can be a symptom of infection
purulent drainage
a thin, watery fluid that’s a combination of blood and serum
serosanguineous drainage
COmplications of wound healing
Hemorrhage
Loss of interstitial fluids
Hematoma
Hemorrhage can occur internally or externally. T or F
True
localized collection of blood; bluish/purplish discoloration
