or
water soluble (are excreted via urine)
BC
Concern for fat soluble vitamins?
Can be stored in body, concern for toxicity
fat soluble vitamin that maintain healthy skin and vision; reduces risks for bone fracture; reduces risk for certain cancers
Vitamin A
fat soluble vitamin form in skin by exposure to UV light important for absorption of calcium
Vitamin D
fat soluble vitamin that helps maintain integrity of cell membrane; acts as antioxidant
Vitamin E
fat soluble vitamin used by liver to produce clotting factor; antidote for Coumidin
Vitamin K
vitamins not stored in body, need daily intake as excess is excreted in urine
Water soluble vitamins
Vitamin Bs, Folic Acid, Vitamin C
water soluble vitamin that plays role in formation of RBCs & synthesis of DNA & RNA * intrinsic factor produced by stomach needed for absorption*
Vitamin B12
inorganic substances found in nearly all body tissues/ fluids; help build body tissues & regulate metabolism
minerals
what is needed to absorb calcium?
Vitamin D
most abundant mineral in body important for bone & teeth formation; contraction & relaxation of <3 muscle
Calcium
mineral involved in protein synthesis; lost thru vomit & diarrhea; to be restricted w/ renal failure
Potassium
mineral thats a trace element; deficiency can lead to goiter
Iodine
